Volunteer: Help as a START Literacy Program Tutor this Fall 2026

Learn how to teach elementary-age youth to read as a trained tutor. Goodman Community Center is offering a tutoring program that teams adult tutors with elementary youth. Teams of adults and youth will work to improve the young person‘s reading skills, with support from our Goodman Literacy Specialist.

This program runs for a total of 13 weeks, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3-5pm. Fall semester starts up during the 2nd week of September. 

Sessions are broken into two chapters (see below):

Chapter 1: For the first 5 weeks, all new tutors attend a Science of Reading evidence-based training where they learn to use toolboxes of literacy resources and activities (before tutor sessions begin). 

Chapter 2: The next 8 weeks (following the training) volunteers tutor elementary students in an after school "Lit Club." 

All tutors are assigned to a tutor team that provides continued coaching and support.

Ideal tutors and enthusiastic about reading and literacy and are available for the listed 6 hours per week.

Our Program Kitchen prepares, cooks & distributes hundreds of meals per day, Monday through Fridays.

These meals feed our youth programs, Older Adult Programs, Meals on Wheels Program as well as some other offsite partners.  We are looking for some extra hands in the kitchen on Thursdays, from about 12:30pm-4pm.

Tasks would include- Food Prep, dishwashing and some cleanup.

Our Middle School program is looking for volunteers who have STEM expertise and would be willing to facilitate weekly activities. Activities could vary from drone-flying classes to experiments to anything else that a volunteer may have expertise in. Summer programs run mid June through August, during the day. 

Volunteers should have background in some sort of STEM-related field and interest and/or experience working with Middle School aged youth.

Our Meals on Wheels program prepares and packages meals for nearly 300 Older Adults per day. We have both morning shifts and afternoon shifts that are generally filled by regular volunteers, but anywhere from once every two weeks, to twice per week, we are seeking someone who could serve as a substitute when our regular volunteers are out for vacations, appointments, etc. 

We are looking for both regular/weekly volunteers and substitutes.

Our Older adult program is looking for someone to help out with designing and creating monthly lunch menus, monthly activities calendars and occasional flyers on Canva. 

Volunteers should- 

- Have experience with designing in Microsoft Word

- Have their own access to Microsoft Word

- Have experience in designing simple flyers in Canva

- Have access to their own computer/device

Work can be done from home, or in person at the Goodman Center. 

Hours would range from 2-5 hours per month, including 1 monthly check in with Older Adult program staff to review materials before printing. Scheduling is very flexible, however, there would be regular deadlines towards the end of the month. 

Role would ideally start in late spring/early summer and go, eat least until January 2027.

The Older Adult program is seeking a volunteer who can help out with attendance and data entry. 

The volunteer should be comfortable using attendance entry software as well as excel and will need to be able to stop at goodman at least once per week to pick up physical attendance and registration forms to be entered.

Volunteer must also be comfortable handling confidential information.

What would this entail?- you would have a 2 hour block, in person at Goodman, where Older adults can sign up for 30 minute timeslots to work with you to get questions answered. Questions vary from how to block scam emails to how to upload new photos to and from a device. 

Ideal volunteers are available on Mondays, 10am-Noon, are comfortable working with Older Adults and have some experience in technology, cell phones, utilizing the internet to help troubleshoot technology-related questions, etc.
