Opportunities From: Goodman Community Center

Learn how to teach elementary-age youth to read as a trained tutor. Goodman Community Center is offering a tutoring program that teams adult tutors with elementary youth. Teams of adults and youth will work to improve the young person‘s reading skills, with support from our Goodman Literacy Specialist.

This program runs for a total of 13 weeks, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3-5pm. Fall semester starts up during the 2nd week of September. 

Sessions are broken into two chapters (see below):

Chapter 1: For the first 5 weeks, all new tutors attend a Science of Reading evidence-based training where they learn to use toolboxes of literacy resources and activities (before tutor sessions begin). 

Chapter 2: The next 8 weeks (following the training) volunteers tutor elementary students in an after school "Lit Club." 

All tutors are assigned to a tutor team that provides continued coaching and support.

Ideal tutors and enthusiastic about reading and literacy and are available for the listed 6 hours per week.

Our middle and high school programs could always use extra hands with facilitating activities and homework help.

Our Program Kitchen prepares, cooks & distributes hundreds of meals per day, Monday through Fridays.

These meals feed our youth programs, Older Adult Programs, Meals on Wheels Program as well as some other offsite partners.  We are looking for some extra hands in the kitchen on Thursdays, from about 12:30pm-4pm.

Tasks would include- Food Prep, dishwashing and some cleanup.

The Goodman Center’s food pantry is looking for some more hands! We’re looking for new volunteers to join our team so we can continue providing the best possible service to our community. We offer a variety of shifts — some focused on stocking shelves and organizing donations, and others that involve supporting customers while they shop. Two types of shifts are- 

Prep/Donation Sorting & Restocking- These volunteers work during non-shopping hours with donations and delivery orders. Duties include sorting through carts, boxes and bins of food and household items and stocking shelves in our pantry. Volunteers must be comfortable with some lifting & bending, working in a team environment as well as sorting through produce to determine what should be kept vs composted. 

Shopping Hour volunteers- Help with the shopping experience. Volunteers help keep things flowing, enforce shopping limits, occasional shelf restocking and possibly some cleanup after shoppers leave. Volunteers must be comfortable working with diverse populations, customer service and with enforcing shopping limits. 

Help is especially needed during our Monday prep hours (10am-Noon) on a mostly weekly basis. 

All shifts are generally during the day, Monday-Thursday.

Our Meals on Wheels program prepares and packages meals for nearly 300 Older Adults per day. We have both morning shifts and afternoon shifts that are generally filled by regular volunteers, but anywhere from once every two weeks, to twice per week, we are seeking someone who could serve as a substitute when our regular volunteers are out for vacations, appointments, etc. 

We are looking for both regular/weekly volunteers and substitutes. 

Substitute Volunteers would get a weekly email, informing them of the upcoming shifts that we need help filling. 

Interested volunteers must be flexible, comfortable working with food and comfortable working with a small, but strong team. If interested, please respond to this opportunity and you will hear from our volunteer manager, shortly. 

We are looking for a few volunteers who are bilingual in English/Spanish to help in our Food Pantry. Our pantry serves around 350 households per week. Family size, income, circumstances and languages vary. Our pantry is mostly a choice-model, meaning customers get to shop through and choose their items, but also follow limits. 

Duties would include- working our produce market, helping shoppers/enforcing limits, checking people in, working our rapid pantry, etc. 

Days we are looking for- Tuesdays 9am-Noon and Thursdays Noon-3pm.

The Older Adult program is seeking a volunteer who can help out with attendance and data entry. 

The volunteer should be comfortable using attendance entry software as well as excel and will need to be able to stop at goodman at least once per week to pick up physical attendance and registration forms to be entered.

Volunteer must also be comfortable handling confidential information. 

Estimated timeline of role- 

Volunteer will start by meeting with our current data volunteer to learn the ropes of the software and the systems in place to enter and update data.

Volunteer will then, eventually, take over a portion of the work and possibly, at some point, take over all work.

 Once volunteer takes on work, they will meet with our program staff on a monthly basis to ensure all data is entered before monthly reporting is due.
