Join our S.T.A.R.T.* Literacy Initiative

Learn how to teach elementary-age youth to read as a trained tutor. The START Initiative offers a tutoring program that teams adult tutors with youth. Teams of adults and youth work to improve the young person's reading skills, with support from our Literacy Specialist.

Sessions run for 13 weeks from September 10 - December 12.
The first 5 weeks all tutors attend training in the evidence-based Science of Reading curriculum and tutors will be given toolboxes of activities and resources to use in tutoring sessions. Tutor sessions follow

Training will occur
September 10 - October 10; Tues, Wed, & Thurs from 3 - 5 pm

Tutoring sessions will run
October 15 - December 12; Tues, Wed & Thurs from 3 - 5 pm (no sessions Nov 26 - 28)
Training and tutoring will occur at our Ironworks Building at 149 Waubesa Street.

Ideal volunteers are enthusiastic about reading and literacy. Prior experience with teaching literacy or reading is a plus, but not required. We hope volunteers can attend all three days, for all 13 weeks (fewer days/ hours may be accommodated).
If you are interested in exploring this opportunity please click the respond button and tell us little about your experience and interest in literacy and tutoring with young people.  Someone from our team will reach out to follow up about your interest and share more about S.T.A.R.T. Initiative.
